Protect your UTV bed with an urethane coating

UTVs are built to be tough and last but unfortunately many manufactures don’t go the extra step of making a bed extra durable.  Most are a powder coated steel bed.  Some have a rubber pad that protects the bottom surface a bit but it really only provides a limited barrier and the inevitable scratching of the bed occurs.

You can add years to your beds life by adding a 2 part urethane coating to all of the bed surfaces.  It takes an hour or 2 to prep and apply followed by a curing period.  With no experience you can make it look great and add years to its useful life.

I recommend using Speedcoat T-Rex 2K urethane.  The 1 quart kit offers everything you need and is plenty to generously coat your UTV bed.  It costs under $50 and includes the coating, brush, pan and roller.

Thoroughly clean the bed with a power washer, scrub brush and elbow grease.  Any rust spots should be scoured with a wire brush to remove as much rust as possible.  Make sure it I see completely dry before proceeding and work out of the sun.  The primary part of the mix is in a steel can and has extra space to add the hardening solution.  Add the full container of hardener per the instructions, cap-it and shake to mix a minute or 2.  Dump the mixed coating into a roller pan and start applying it to the bed.  Have a plan on where you will start and where you will finish. I brushed creases and crevices first before moving to the larger areas.  Be generous with your applications- if it feels like you are pulling the coating go thicker in application. Once it’s applied hit it with the roller to create texture and leave it set for 2 hours.  Do not place anything on or in the bed for at least 24 hours or more if possible- I wait 48 to be completely safe.
