Massimo MSU Fuel Guage not working

A heavily reported issue many Massimo MSU owners have reported is a fuel guage that simply does not work.  You see this in any of the Rhino Clone UTVs from Massimo, HiSun, Cabella’s, Coleman, etc. since they all use the same basic parts including the fuel pump unit which includes a float that feeds to a switch and a signal is sent back to the fuel guage on the UTV dash.  The problem lies in 2 areas:

1. a poor connection between the guage and the sensor.  You may resolve this by checking the wire plug on the top of the fuel pump unit.  It is easily accessed by removing the passenger side seat.  The fuel pump top is secured into the gas tank with a black screw ring.  With the ring, on top of the pump there are a few lines coming in or going out of the pump and a connector for the wires.  Press the plugs securing tab and gently pull out the connector from the fuel pump head.  Check that all of the wire pins are pushed down into the connector so they make good contact with the pin on the other plug.  Securely snap the plug back into place and check the digital gauge to see if this fixes the problem.

If not move on to #2

2. The gauge float is not lined up properly and does not allow the float to move.  You need to disconnect the plug as described in #1.  Then you need to undo the black screw ring holding down the fuel pump unit.  You are opening the gas tank so I can’t stress enough- no flames, sparks, etc.  if you don’t know what your doing leave it for a professional to do.  The fuel pump unit is quite tall and to fully remove it from the gas tank you likely need to clip a zip tie or two holding down the fuel lines connected to the top of the pump.  Check that the float lever has mobility through the range of empty to full and carefully replace everything back into the tank, reconnect the hoses and plug and tighten down the screw ring while making sure the pump is properly rotated.

If neither issue fixes the problem you will likely have to replace the entire fuel pump, float and everything below the pump lid.  Fortunatly you can find replacements online for $70-120 depending on where you get it from.  Some offer just the bare pump unit, some include the float, some include the  screw ring- be sure you are clear on what you are buying when you place an order.

As far as trying to get this fixed where you bought it or through the manufacturer you will probably waste your time.  Tractor Supply and similar farm stores that sell the UTVs don’t provide service and will refer you to “authorized service centers” that a few and far between and rarely look at and fix the UTVs despite being “authorized” by the manufactures.  The manufactures are even less responsive and helpless.
